The Guardian’s photo team has chosen Reuters war photographer Goran Tomasevic (photo), a veteran of covering conflict for more than 20 years in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria, as agency photographer of the year.

His work in 2013 included coverage of the conflict in Syria and the Westgate shopping centre attack in Kenya, where he lives as Nairobi-based chief photographer for East Africa.

Born in Belgrade in 1969, Tomasevic started working for Reuters as a freelance photographer in 1996 during the anti-Milosevic demonstrations. He was based in Baghdad during the Iraq conflict, in Jerusalem during tense times between the Israelis and Palestinians and was senior photographer in Egypt during the uprising.
