Marathon Man who built the new pensioners website

Paul Walker (photo), the former Reuters man who built the Pension Review Group’s new website, is a mad keen runner with a dodgy back going for next year’s London Marathon in memory of his sister Louise.

Paul, 51, started running in 2019, the year Louise died of leukaemia. She was three months short of her 50th birthday and left a husband and two teenage children.

Louise was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2015 and received a stem cell transplant from Paul that year. After several rounds of chemo she was in remission until 2018, when sadly the cancer came back.

Paul, who hadn’t run since his school days, threw himself into the sport to raise money for blood cancer charities. In 2019 he ran both the Asics London 10K raising money for Barts Hospital, where his sister was treated, and the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Bloodwise/Blood Cancer UK.

Unfortunately, Paul’s enthusiasm for charity running did not help his bad back, which began years earlier lifting heavy computer kit. It finally gave out in late 2019 and he only started serious running again last year.

Encouraged by members of his running club, he has set his sights on the 21 April 2024 London Marathon to raise money for Leukaemia Care (see Just Giving link below).

As part of his training, Paul ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon again last month. “But,” as he says, “ I’m not looking forward to the long training runs (for the Big One) through the dark, cold, wet winter months.”

Married, with two teenage children, Paul built the new PRG website in his own time for free, in consultation with PRG members, particularly Charlie RichardsonJane Slatter and Adrian Robson among others. He was at Reuters/Thomson Reuters for 11 years from 2003 to 2014 in the Professional Services Group working on IT projects.

A business analyst by trade, he is now a partner director of Epitechnic Ltd, which he founded in 2020 with three colleagues. His company provides specialised cloud computing consultancy in the UK, Germany and Poland.
