Michael Conlon heads for the hills from the front lines

Chicago-based correspondent Michael Conlon has decided that after 48 years on the front lines of US journalism - and still going strong - now would be a good time to retire. To his colleagues in Chicago and around Reuters, it comes as bittersweet news, says Peter Bohan, Midwest bureau chief.

“We're delighted he can take his guitar and head to the hills of Wisconsin hale and hearty, singing Irish ballads ‘til the cows come home. But we'll miss his skills, comradeship, good humor and experience. We'll be celebrating all those in the weeks to come. He'll ride into the sunset on July 7.

“If journalism is ‘the first take of history’, Mike's role as a witness has been longer than most. From 20 years with UPI and 28 more with Reuters, he has covered hundreds of stories with accuracy, clarity, energy and a flair that made his byline a rock for readers around the world.” ■
