Thomson family again richest Canadians

The Thomson family, majority owners of Thomson Reuters, held on easily to their position as the richest Canadians although their wealth dropped this year while most other members of the top 10 made gains.

The family, headed by Thomson Reuters chairman David Thomson, pictured, is worth about C$20.1 billion, according to Canadian Business magazine’s annual ranking of Canada’s wealthiest people.

The family’s worth fell about 5.7 per cent as some of its media-focused properties struggled in trying economic times, however.

With his brother Peter, Thomson is co-chairman of the family’s investment vehicle, Woodbridge. Their multi-media holdings include Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, and dozens of TV channels and radio stations.

Retail mogul Galen Weston, the next richest and the highest ranking individual in the list, saw his wealth improve by three per cent to an estimated C$8.2 billion. ■
