Reuters hooks up with Variety for showbiz news

Reuters signed a wide-ranging syndication deal to make US show business magazine Variety its partner for entertainment news.

The deal with Variety owner Penske Media Corporation will extend the reach of the publication’s breaking news, feature stories, columns, reviews, analysis, data and original video content to Reuters clients around the world. It includes Spanish-language content and is expected to begin in August.

“Reuters is committed to providing our customers around the world with real-time, high-impact multimedia news,” said Daniel Mandell, Reuters’ senior vice president of business development. “As a leading provider of quality entertainment news, Variety and Variety Latino are natural partners to help Reuters deliver unparalleled entertainment coverage to our clients.”

“This new alliance with Reuters is a hugely significant deal for Variety,” said Variety editors-in-chief Claudia Eller, Andrew Wallenstein and Cynthia Littleton in a joint statement. “Over the past year and a half we have redoubled our efforts to produce bold, thought-provoking content, and this arrangement enables us to widely distribute our fast-breaking entertainment news and analysis to hungry outlets all over the globe.”

Financial terms of the deal, which encompasses content drawn from both Variety’s magazine and website, were not disclosed. Reuters previously partnered with various other print and online publications to provide entertainment news. ■
