Reuters Breakingviews names new global editor

Reuters has appointed a new global editor of Breakingviews, its international commentary arm.

He is Dutch journalist Peter Thal Larsen (photo) who joined the website in 2009 and led coverage of financial services from London before moving to Hong Kong as Asia editor in 2012. There he built up the local team and launched an Asian edition. Since 2017, he has led the team in Europe as EMEA editor.

Larsen has been Breakingviews interim editor since April when co-founder Rob Cox stepped down to head Credit Suisse Group’s corporate communications.

Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni said In a message to staff that Larsen’s plans include expanding Breakingviews’ in-depth commentary “to offer a more forward-looking and market-oriented perspective for its readers, supplementing its swift and authoritative analysis of breaking financial and business stories.”

Prior to joining Reuters, Larsen spent a decade at the Financial Times in London and New York. As banking editor, he led its award-winning coverage of the global financial crisis.

Reuters bought Breakingviews for £13 million in 2009. As part of the deal its co-founder Hugo Dixon stayed on as editor until 2012 when he became editor-at-large. ■
