Ex-bureau chief Jodie Ginsberg named Index CEO

Jodie Ginsberg (photo), a former Reuters UK and Ireland bureau chief, has been appointed chief executive of Index on Censorship, an international charity that promotes freedom of expression and campaigns against censorship throughout the world.

Index uses a unique combination of journalism, campaigning and advocacy to defend freedom of expression for those facing censorship and repression, including journalists, writers, social media users, bloggers, artists, politicians, scientists, academics, activists and citizens.

She worked for Reuters for more ten years, in Johannesburg and London. After Reuters, she worked for the think-tank Demos Finance and education charity Camfed.

Ginsberg said: “Defending freedom of expression is not an easy task but it is a vital one. If we want to live in a world where everyone is free to speak, write, publish or perform without fear of persecution then we need to champion those rights every day. I’m thrilled to be leading an organisation with such an amazing track record in defending free expression and can’t wait to start working with our incredible roster of supporters and contributors.”

She takes up her new post, which is based in London, next month. ■
