Sophie Walker wants to be mayor of London

A former Reuters journalist - Sophie Walker (photo) - is a candidate in London’s mayoral election on 5 May.

Walker, now leader of Britain’s first feminist political party, is one of 12 people vying to take over from outgoing mayor Boris Johnson.

Her Women's Equality Party is acclaimed as the fastest growing political party in the UK. It was founded by broadcaster Sandi Toksvig and journalist Catherine Mayer with the aim of equal representation in politics and business, equal representation in education, equal pay, equal treatment of women in the media, equal parenting rights, an end to violence against women. Women comprise 30 per cent of members of parliament.

Walker’s journalistic assignments during more than a decade at Reuters included Washington and London where she was a top news editor. ■
