Cairo bureau journalists call strike

Journalists in Reuters Cairo bureau paused work and called a strike to press demands for an improved wage structure.

The hour-long protest at the weekend (photo) followed negotiations between staff, their union and management over recent months. It was supported by representatives of the Egypt Journalists’ Syndicate and ended with a plan to strike on 23 November.

Journalists said their wage structure is not in line with economic conditions in Egypt, does not provide protection against economic fluctuations, and is not in line with salary structures other offices in the region. ■
